The Work Of Dry Ice Blasting Services

By Patrick Harris

The process of using dry ice in the cleaning of a surface is known as carbon dioxide cleaning or dry ice blasting. The surface to be cleaned is hit with carbon dioxide or solid ice in a fast-flowing stream of air. This technique works the same way as other cleaning methods like plastic bead, soda, and sand blasting. The major advantage with this method is that it poses no environmental risks in the form of chemical residues. This is what dry ice blasting services do.

During this method, the ice pellets are propelled at a high speed towards the surface that is being cleaned. Once the pellets collide with the surface, they sublime thus transferring the energy to the surface. This produces minimal abrasion. During sublimation, a lot of heat from the surface is absorbed that eventually produces shear stress due to heat shock.

The rate of thermal conductivity between the surface and the contaminant is a factor which this method relies on. It makes the process more efficient. The process of converting a substance from a solid state directly to a gaseous state is what happens during sublimation. The sublimation enables the elimination of the contaminant by creating shock waves. The less important wastes are produced by water blasting but not dry ice cleaning.

There are two forms in which one can use this method. These include the solid pellet form and shaving the ice from a block. The shaved ice block method is not reliable as is it produces ice, which is less effective as compared to the solid pellets. There are three primary factors that facilitate the process of dry ice blasting. They include thermal shock effect, thermal kinetic effect, and pellet kinetic energy.

Basically, this method is an improved version of abrasive blasting. The major difference between the two is how they are handled. Abrasive blasting machines and dry ice blasting machines are handled very differently. Dry ice unlike other media is utilized at its temperature of sublimation. As a result, there is the risk of building up a dry ice bomb in the pressurization system.

A variety of surfaces like food processing equipment can be done using this abrasive method. The carbon dioxide cleaning method is capable of eradicating contaminants which form on surfaces. It can removed microorganisms such as listeria, E. Coli, and salmonella enterids among others. The ability of dry ice to clean some equipment without the production of fire or any other accident makes it to be the best option.

Proper ventilation is recommended while using the machine. Carbon dioxide is toxic and can cause death if good measures are not taken. Carbon dioxide normally accumulates in the body and reduces the efficiency with which the body absorbs oxygen. When oxygen deficiency prolongs, biological processes in the body are affected and this can lead to serious health problems.

The positioning of the exhaust pipe in the room where the process is taking place is also an aspect which should be considered well. In most of the cases, the exhaust pipe is normally placed at the bottom of the room. This is mainly done because carbon dioxide gas is denser than air and will thus collect on the floor.
