The Beginnings Of Locksmiths Making Locks

By Anthony Powell

In life, one of mans needs is the safety. Whether it be from the outside world or each other. The need of this is strong that for ages, man has tried to keep it a priority and along the way, had invented many things in order to achieve this one goal of being at peace and unharmed. One of these innovations was the door.

The up rise of crime had threatened this desire. To counter this threat, various inventions were made in order to help and keep the many possessions that a person can have, safe from others that may want to take it and steal it. Locks were invented and, through advancements, locksmith Colorado springs in modern times make very good ones.

A machine known a lock, was something that could tightly fasten two piece of materials together so that, when used on something like a box, the box would not open unless a key was used to unlock the device. For people that have a substantial amount of wealth, keeping these thing on is imperative to prevent theft.

Roman nobles were known to posses boxes that could store the wealth that they had possessed. These storage devices were kept in the mansions that they had and had a few guards to make sure no one comes and tries to take it. The key is shaped and made to fit in fingers and be hung there, giving them a good and convenient way to access it.

The coming of the industrial came and with it, many new machineries were invented to lessen the burden on man and produce a much more potent work force. The lock was not exempt from the various improvements made. The locking mechanism was improved vastly and it was made more complex then it was before, giving in a better chance of not being picked.

In 1778, the lever tumbler design was perfected. This works by using a set of levers that will prevent a bolt from moving when it is slid inside the machine. Another one had a double lever that had required a lever to be lifted in a height by having a cut within the lever, so if a person were to lift the lever far, it would not release it.

A breaking and entering occurred in 1816 that forced the government to move. The panic caused by this event had forced them into creating a contest to see who could make a lock that was good enough to not be broken into and had an original and unique key. This was done during the contest and the person hired to do the lock picking could not break it.

Usually the art of being a locksmith is a very traditional occupation. In most countries, being an apprentice first is required before one can become a smith. The required formal education is different from each countries. Some offer up a engineering diploma and others only give out a training certificate after apprenticeship is completed.

All these have helped in making things safer. Thanks to many locks, possession now are at a lower risk of being stole. The safety of everyone is upheld this way.
