Pomeranians are a breed of small dogs classed as a toy dog of the Spitz variety. Spitz type are dogs that long thick furs with pointed ears and muzzles and curly tails. Pomeranians, often called Pom, are a popular breed because of the current trend of owning small dogs.

Purchasing a Pom as pet requires commitment although may be costly yet the experience you will be a rewarding one. You must do research in caring for the properly and all the other things that you must know about them in order to become a responsible owner. Here are some things to know when looking for Pomeranians for sale in Oklahoma City.

Consider if the lifestyle you have fits with the energy of the small Pom breed. You must have enough free time on your schedule because they require lots of it. They need to be frequently brushed and groomed and be walked around a lot. Think about having a larger breed though if you prefer long hikes.

Think of your family ask them what they expect of the potential new member. Explain to them the needs of a Pom and if they have the time for brushing, feeding, walking, playing and training them. Assure them that it is fine to be honest about what they want and feel about them as not to be surprised on the responsibilities after the dog has already been brought into your home.

It is expensive to have Pomeranians as a pet so check your finances if it can handle the probable expenses. The issue will not only be the cost of initially buying them but other as well such as preventive medicines, shots and regular veterinarian visits. There are other things they need such as a tag, collar, toy and specially quality food. Grooming can be done with by a professional although it is expensive or by yourself. You can save some money in doing so although you have to buy some tools and supplies first.

Purchasing from puppy mills should be avoided. These places are breeding many puppies without considering their living standard and health. Puppies with health problems are common here and may result in spending more money on health care. To know if they are a puppy mill, ask information regarding their veterinarian and research about him. Puppy mills also tend to have puppies all year round for sale.

Do not buy from pet stores too because they commonly get their puppies from puppy mills. They will deny this and will tell you that they get them from reputable breeders. Ask for the name of the breeder and his address so can check if it is true although it rarely is. Pet stores that offers adoption from animal shelters in the area is a good place to look out for though.

Differentiate between backyard and hobby breeders. Backyard breeders usually have little knowledge about training or standards and have not tested the dogs if they have genetic conditions. Hobby breeders are very cautious on which they breed and familiar with all their needs making sure the puppies are healthy before selling them.

Look for breeders registered with animal organizations. They breed only the best ones to prevent passing down genetic problems. You can check their facilities and meeting their dogs is allowed too. When you want to be a pet owner, the will interview you to know that you can become a responsible owner.
