The Benefits Of Growing Cycads

By Nancy Phillips

Plants provide us with a lot of benefits. They are used for food, they can be used to enhance appeal and some may be used for medicinal use. As much as all these benefits are present many people still find that they cannot manage a garden or house plants because they lack time. A great alternative for this would be Growing Cycads, as they give the benefits of plants and are easier to maintain.

People usually think that to have property that is of high value one has to invest a lot of time in gaining that. Cycads are the exact opposite of that, as they are very easy to grow and their appearance is appealing to the eye. The best conditions to grow them would be in well-aerated soil and one that does not retain much water, as too much water will cause the roots of the plant to rot out.

As these plants grow slowly, it is important to make sure that their roots are not disturbed once they mature. This means that if they are being grown for the landscape, they should be transplanted when they are young. If they are being planted in the house, one should make sure that the plant never dries up, and watering should be done at least two times a week.

Before purchasing them, everybody should understand that as plants they have various species and all the different species have specific characteristics and specific growth conditions. Planting a species in the wrong conditions will kill the plant so it is important to be knowledgeable to ensure that it grows well and can serve its intended purpose.

Apart from decorative purposes, some of the species may be consumed as food. As only some of them are edible, it is important to know which ones they are so that accidents like poisoning can be avoided. Most of them are used to make food for fowls so farmers who have chicken in their farms can plant them for their birds.

Another use of these plants is that they can be used for medical reasons. The bark and some of the leaves may be taken through special processes to make medicine. The oils that are extracted from the seeds make oils that help in addressing skin problems. Sometimes, their large leaves can be harvested and dried also under special steps to make decorative pieces that have been known to fetch a handsome price in some areas where they are in high demand.

When fully grown, these plants have fibers on their leaves that can be taken up, prepared and used to make material for stuffing pillows and mattresses. They are organic so they will not have any side effects to a person. They can also make hats, which could be sold and this poses as an avenue for income generation for anyone who plants them in their garden.

This species of plants has also been known to have nitrogen-fixing properties in the soil that makes the soil more fertile and suitable for growing other plants. When matured, the big species can be cut down and their stems can be used as a building material. They are almost extinct so to save them from completely running put, more people should consider having them.
